Hi, I'm Frederik L. Schodt (a.k.a. "Fred") The above portraits/mug shots were rendered by a Panasonic artificial vision system. The one on the left was output as a rubber stamp, which I used to create an image on paper that was then scanned into a computer. The one on the right was drawn by a robot, the robot arm holding an ink-soaked brush and tracing the outlines generated by the vision system. Do the images look like me? Guess!
In 1994 I published America and the Four Japans: Friend, Foe, Model, Mirror with Stone Bridge Press. It's designed to be a type of primer on U.S.-Japan relations.
My second book about manga, or Japanese comic books, is Dreamland Japan: Writings on Modern Manga. It will be available the end of June.
