'The Fourth String,' 'A Shameful Life' reviewed in newest issue of The Pacific Rim Review of Books

Michael Palmer - Monday, March 16, 2020

Maryse Cardin and Trevor Carolan take a deeper look at Janet Pocorobba's shamisen memoir and Osamu Dazai's classic "roman à clef."

In issue twenty-five of The Pacific Rim Review of Books Maryse Cardin reviews Janet Pocorobba's The Fourth String while Trevor Carolan reviews Mark Gibeau's new translation of the Osamu Dazai's classic, A Shameful Life.

Maryse Cardin on The Fourth String:

"In this candid memoir, Pocorobba recounts the years she spent in devotion to her teacher and to learning the intracacies of the shamisen—a traditional Japanese three string instrument famously difficult to play."

Trevor Carolan on A Shameful Life:

"Dazai's novel is unrelentingly bleak.... but the joylessness here is unique, yet still strangely readable. It's a grim portrait of post-war ennui and failure of nerve."

Unfortunately, to read the full reviews you'll have to get your hands on a physical copy of this wonderful magazine. Fortunately, individual issues and subscriptions are available from the Pacific Rim Review of Books website at an affordable price!

Oh, Tama!

A deeply eccentric novel about lives and connections—and a cat of course—in 1980s Tokyo: witty, offbeat, and strangely profound.
